Summit has released a statement saying Catherine Hardwicke will not be back to direct “New Moon”. Below is the press release:

SUMMIT BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW MOON DIRECTOR

Los Angeles, CA, December 7, 2008 ? Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted TWILIGHT film franchise. Summit’s targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke’s required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen. Thus as has been done before with many successful film franchises, the studio will employ a new director for NEW MOON.

“I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct NEW MOON,” said Hardwicke. “Directing TWILIGHT has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel? it is a great story.”

“Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the TWILIGHT franchise and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects,” said Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production. “We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch.”

Good. Maybe a new director will be able to inject the next movie with more of the intensity that’s in the book. That will be especially important for New Moon because Bella’s alternately catatonic and 6th-level-of-hell depressed for so much of the book.

  2. OME! i tot agree! im glad there will b a new director! Hardwick made Twilight mor of a thrill, horror, action movie instead of the romance/thriller it was supposed to be! well, i lov new moon, so hopefully the new director will empasize the heart break, lov, and friendship new moon has!

i think she did a good job on twilight, but not good enough!!! i hope that the new moon movie will be more book based. get a director that is also a big twilight fan!!!

I agree with you all that the passion that was in the book was lost in the movie BUT I do understand that the director was trying to appeal to those that had not read the books and men! lol I think they could def put more of the passion in the movie tho… I also understand it’s hard to make a 500+ book into a movie! So a lot of what we understand as book readers isn’t always going to be there.. Let’s just say the movies are a good visual taste for us twilight series book readers!!! I LOVED New Moon and I’m in the process of reading Eclipse right now! I love Eclipse as well.. So awesome. I wonder if they are going to make movies out of all of them or turn it into a series or what? What do you all think?

I’m not sure exactly how I feel about Catherine not being the director now. I really think that she has unfairly gotten all the blame for it not being closer to the book but we need to remember she didn’t write the movie. Melissa Rosenberg was the writer for the screenplay. Catherine just tried to do the best she could with what she had as well. What I’m afraid of is who the new director will be and if they will stay true to the Twilight fans and make New Moon exceptionally brilliant!!!!!! They have a bigger budget this time around so they should be able to do great things because of that. I soooo agree that as a book reader you still were able to get the movie but for those who didn’t read the book there are things they might not understand. My husband came with me to see Twilight and I had to explain some stuff to him afterwards. I just hope whoever takes over does a great job with New Moon!!!

okay i so agree with heather. at first i blamed it all on catherine and truely its not her fault its the screen writer i mean i hated this women for ruining basiacly but the movie was amazing. we need to be thankful that catherine even wanted to do twilight in the first place or we wouldve have to wait for some director to come by it and screw it up even more yes i agree i think they could have stayed more to the book but they tried as best as they could and on top of it all they had a low bugget and this new dude who is directing it im kinda scared cause what if he doesnt have stephanie involed like catherine and what if this dude does not care about any of us twilighters i mean really im grateful that catherine is the one to direct twilight. like i said what if he dont care at all he could be doing it for the money i mean he has dakotta fanning playing jane and shes this huge actress now and cqatherine found all of these amazing actors and actresses that we still wouldnt know who they were if it wasnt for catherine i mean try not to live without rob pattinson idk about you but that would be hell for me so i think alot of twilighters have some thinking to do for to blame on who didnt stay true to the book
