Is it fair to assume that the character you play is a long way from your own personality?

Anna Kendrick: Oh yes! But that was the fun part about it. Natalie does so many things that I would like to do and she is unapologetically who she is in a way that I wish I was. Sometimes there are things that you wish you would say or do and you think about it. And it was easy to transfer that into someone else. Personally, I generally avoid confrontation so it was a release to play Natalie because she’s not going to back away. And like I said, getting to yell at George Clooney was pretty cathartic.

Kendrick’s uptight, anxious Air character, Natalie, certainly would not have been caught dead telecommunicating with a 48-year-old, hunk or not. But Kendrick says she holds a special place for her fictional alter ego, who may have initially rubbed some viewers the wrong way.

“I love her to pieces! You know, she was a nightmare, but I’ll defend her to death,” she says. “People don’t really like her at the beginning of the movie, and they really warm to her when she kind of breaks down, but I really love her even when she’s more or less an antagonist because she’s really strong and really driven.”

His blurb manages to mention films by all the nominees – we believe his claim that he wrote it himself given that it’s not immediately forgettable. Given that this is voted for by the public, are we immediately discounting the ace-but-unknown (and foreign) Tahar Rahim for A Prophet, and betting that Twilight’s Kristen Stewart will take it? We kinda are. But let’s see: the BAFTA goes to…KRISTEN STEWART. What a shock. “Wow. Thank you. I guess first I have to thank all the fans of Twilight for proving again and again to be THE most devoted and attentive fans ever. Considering this is voted, credit is due to them so thank you. To the other actors nominated, I am so blown away by you that I can’t even describe it. To be voted among you is just overwhelming. With so much buzz surrounding her now, it’s hard not to see Anna feeling a little unloved by the “Twilight” crowd. Not only did they say she was the “Twilight” actor least likely to win an Oscar (choosing Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson over her, despite her Oscar buzz and now nomination), but her character Jessica Stanley doesn’t have much shelf life beyond the third film, “Eclipse.”

She added, “I’ve been really lucky to not be defined completely by that series.”

Anna Kendrick has been nominated for an Oscar in the Actress in a Supporting Role category for her role in the movie Up In the Air.

At age 12, the Maine native was nominated for a Tony Award, for her role in the 1998 musical High Society. After she auditioned for the role of Natalie in Up in the Air, she thought she’d tanked, given director Jason Reitman’s utter non-reaction. Turned out he’d written the role for her, after having seen her in the small high-school film Rocket Science.
